Endocrine Physiology-Pancreas

While students have previously learned about the exocrine functions of the pancreas in earlier lectures, this hour is dedicated to the endocrine role of the pancreas. After characterizing the absorptive and postabsorptive states, this lecture dives into the hormonal control of blood glucose, focussing on insulin, glucagon, and glucose counterregulatory controls.
Learning Objectives
- Compare and contrast the absorptive and postabsorptive states. Identify which is associated with the anabolic phase vs. the catabolic phase, describe the major energy sources associated with each state, and explain if and why glucose is primarily being stored or released by the liver in each state.
- Identify stimulation for insulin secretion and discuss the physiological significance of these stimuli.
- Describe the major actions of insulin on muscle, adipose tissue, and liver cells. Explain how insulin carries out its effects on these target cells.
- Discuss the actions of the glucose-counterregulatory controls glucagon, sympathetic activity/epinephrine, cortisol, and growth hormone. Describe the stimuli for activating these controls.
